American Airlines Senior Vice President of Network Planning, Brian Znotins, expressed enthusiasm for the carrier’s first Airbus A321XLR. The 'extended long range' version of the largest Airbus narrowbody aircraft is anticipated to bring significant changes to American Airlines' route planning.

"Rubs hands together in anticipation," Znotins tweeted on August 23, 2024.

Several airlines, including United, JetBlue, Air Canada, and Qantas, are also looking forward to integrating this aircraft into their fleets. For American Airlines, the A321XLR comes at a crucial time as they have retired their Boeing 757s, 767s, and Airbus A330s. Additionally, delays in deliveries of new Boeing 787s have further constrained their transatlantic capacity.

American plans to deploy the A321XLR on premium cross-country routes while retrofitting existing A321T planes back into standard domestic configurations. This involves removing first-class seating and reducing legroom in coach.

The new configuration for the A321XLR includes 20 business class suites, 12 premium economy seats, and 123 coach seats. Initially expected last fall with deliveries beginning in December 2024 and operational use by summer 2025 for Europe routes, American missed out on last summer's Europe travel surge due to a lack of suitable aircraft.

These planes are expected to primarily operate from New York JFK and Philadelphia but may also fly out of Charlotte and Chicago O’Hare. However, design changes related to concerns over the extra center fuel tank raise questions about potential range limitations and whether the XLR will meet its expectations for long-haul operations across the Atlantic.

Many airlines are optimistic that narrowbodies like the A321XLR can profitably handle transatlantic operations and transform seasonal routes into year-round services without requiring large passenger volumes.
