Delta will charge 425,000 SkyMiles one-way from Atlanta to Santiago, Chile in business class on April 17th.

This date is not a peak travel day nor is the flight fully booked. Delta's inventory shows wide availability for its cheapest fares with no reservations currently in the business class cabin.

Interestingly, Delta offers award space on this flight to its partners. Air France KLM Flying Blue members can book the same flight for just 90,000 Flying Blue points. This means Delta charges its own members 4.7 times the miles that Air France frequent flyers pay for the same flight.

Delta does not frequently offer saver awards in business class but when available, these seats can be booked at reasonable costs by frequent flyers globally – as long as they are not using Delta’s own miles.

The Vice President in charge of Delta SkyMiles has stated they do not prioritize offering strong redemption value: “we are not necessarily trying to play the game with customers.” Despite this, customers continue earning miles and using their credit cards even though poor value is offered intentionally.

For those who are not bound to Delta’s hub and do not prioritize SkyMiles status over point value, better miles can be earned through other programs. Even if intending to fly Delta, it is advantageous to earn more valuable points than what SkyMiles offers.

Air France KLM’s Flying Blue program partners with major transferable currencies such as Chase, American Express, Citibank, Capital One, Wells Fargo, and Bilt. This makes it easier to accumulate a balance with Air France and redeem flights without committing until ready to book.
