JetBlue is set to reduce its service at Washington's National Airport this winter, one of only three U.S. airports with legally limited flight numbers, facilitating profitability.

Aviation watchdog JonNYC reported that 27% of JetBlue’s total flights—7 out of 27—will be suspended from October 27, 2024, through March 29, 2025. The airline will permanently drop Fort Myers service and eliminate the currently suspended route from Washington National to New York JFK.

“The number of Boston flights is reduced by three,” stated JonNYC. “The number of Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Orlando flights each get reduced by one.”

JetBlue's new strategy focuses on cutting unprofitable routes, including significant reductions in Los Angeles and transatlantic flights. The airline has already announced its withdrawal from 15 cities and deferred the delivery of 44 Airbus planes.

The company is actively courting frequent flyers from competitors while its pilots express concerns over wages. JetBlue's renewed focus targets leisure travel, visits to friends and relatives, and cross-country flying from strongholds like New York JFK and Boston as well as Florida. They will maintain services to Puerto Rico and the Caribbean but are stepping back from pursuing corporate travel.

The reduction in winter flights between Florida and the Northeast raises questions about the future use of slots during this period. Given their minimum use obligations for slots, JetBlue may lease some out or vary flight times to meet the required usage rate.
