California is on the brink of banning leaded aviation gasoline statewide, pending Governor Gavin Newsom's signature. Politico Pro reports that the California state Senate passed a bill on Thursday to outlaw the fuel starting in 2031. This move makes California the first state to pass such a ban, with several other states considering similar legislation.

The Senate approved the bill with a 30-8 vote, following a House vote of 59-11 for SB1193, sponsored by Democratic Senator Caroline Menjivar. The bill now awaits Governor Newsom's decision; he has until September 30 to sign or veto it. However, given the two-thirds majority support in both chambers, any potential veto could be overridden.

Originally, Menjivar proposed a phase-out starting in 2026 based on a health risk formula. The amended measure unequivocally bans airport operators and any public or private entities from selling or distributing leaded fuel beginning in 2031. This delay addresses concerns from aviation groups about safety risks if an alternative fuel is not available in time.
