The Covid-19 pandemic was a unique period marked by widespread mask mandates and enhanced cleaning protocols in public spaces. Many businesses, including hotels, adopted stringent safety measures, often citing health guidelines as the reason for reduced services.

One such hotel, the Simpson Hotel in Duncan, Arizona, continues to enforce vaccination requirements for its guests in 2024. The hotel's policy is rooted in a personal loss experienced by the owners: "In loving memory of the five dear ones we lost to Covid-19, we ask that our guests be current on vaccinations. We are willing to make exceptions here and there as long as a guest is healthy and respects our wish not have the virus in our airspace. We follow the science around Covid and we hope that you do too if you plan to stay with us."

This policy is not a remnant from earlier years but is explicitly marked for "2024-5." The hotel asserts that it follows scientific guidance regarding Covid-19.

However, questions arise about whether this approach aligns with current scientific understanding. In early 2021, vaccines were largely effective at preventing transmission. Today, their efficacy has diminished; they no longer reliably prevent infection or transmission despite offering protection against severe illness.

The hotel's stance appears more sentimental than scientifically driven: "in loving memory of..” Nevertheless, it is meaningful to the owners and reflects their personal experience during the pandemic.

Critics argue that while vaccination remains important, it may not align with current science to require it for all guests given waning vaccine effectiveness and other preventive measures available today. Additionally, allowing exceptions for 'healthy' individuals raises further questions about what criteria determine healthiness—such as body mass index or absence of chronic illnesses—and whether these criteria effectively mitigate asymptomatic spread.

Ultimately, the Simpson Hotel's policy serves as a reminder of past practices during an unprecedented time in history when public health measures were rapidly evolving based on emerging data.
