As Hurricane Milton approaches Florida as a Category 4 storm, preparations are underway across the state. Central Florida residents are stocking up on essentials, while visitors at Disney World face decisions about their travel plans.

Orlando International Airport will close on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at 8 a.m. Disney World has announced phased closures of its parks starting the same day: Disney's Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom will close at 1 p.m., followed by Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Disney Springs at 2 p.m. These closures are expected to extend through Thursday.

Disney has also closed certain accommodations like Fort Wilderness Resort and Copper Creek Villas & Cabins beginning Wednesday morning. Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party scheduled for Thursday is canceled with refunds provided.

"Since opening in 1971, Disney has only closed nine times due to hurricanes," notes Disney regarding its rare weather-related closures.

For those affected by the hurricane warning issued for Orlando or their residence within seven days of arrival, Disney offers flexible rescheduling or cancellation options without fees for packages booked directly with them. "Most room-only and vacation packages can be modified to change travel dates or canceled online," according to the company's policy.

During Hurricane Ian in 2022, guests were advised to check into hotels early and shelter in place with limited dining options available. Similar precautions are likely as Hurricane Milton nears.

Disney aims to maintain some level of enjoyment during storms by organizing indoor activities and character appearances at resorts. "While guests were sheltering in place...Disney arranged indoor activities like movie marathons, games and crafts," reported during Hurricane Ian's impact.

Despite potential disruptions from Hurricane Milton, visitors who choose to remain may experience less crowded parks upon reopening due to many canceling or postponing trips. The situation remains dynamic as both local authorities and Disney monitor developments closely.
