A special charter flight by Air New Zealand took off from Christchurch on Saturday, providing 50 children associated with Koru Care a memorable experience. The flight offered a scenic tour over the South Island, an initiative aimed at giving these children, who have serious medical conditions or disabilities, an opportunity to enjoy flying.

Koru Care has been collaborating with Air New Zealand for over four decades. This partnership has consistently delivered memorable experiences for children in need. On this occasion, the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner embarked on its journey at 1:30 pm, tracing a route that included Queenstown and Dunedin before returning to Christchurch. The aircraft flew at an altitude allowing the passengers to appreciate the South Island's landscapes.

Captain David Morgan, Air New Zealand's Chief Pilot, described the event as a unique chance for both those onboard and observers on the ground. "It was fantastic to be able to give children who may not have the opportunity to travel overseas the thrill of flying on one of our larger international aircraft, over some of the world's most stunning scenery right here at home," Captain Morgan stated.

Before departure, participants attended a themed pre-flight party at Christchurch Airport called 'Around the World in a Day,' featuring activities and food inspired by cities like New York and Tokyo. During the flight, each child received a certificate indicating that a star had been named after them.

Air New Zealand CEO Greg Foran emphasized the importance of this tradition. "The day was a heartwarming reminder of the magic and wonder of flying, and it was an absolute privilege to welcome our Little Stars onboard."

Tracey Curran from Koru Care NZ expressed gratitude for Air New Zealand's ongoing support. "Air New Zealand has consistently gone above and beyond to make their dreams come true, and this flight was no exception."

To address environmental concerns, Air New Zealand will match the emissions from this flight with carbon credits and contribute towards biodiversity projects in Aotearoa.

Koru Care began as an initiative by Air New Zealand volunteers but has since grown into an official charity with branches across New Zealand. These branches operate independently, focusing on fundraising efforts within their respective areas to benefit children facing various challenges.
