The Maldives, officially known as the Republic of Maldives, is an island nation located in South Asia within the Indian Ocean. Positioned nearly 450 miles southwest of mainland India, it holds the distinction of being Asia's smallest country. Comprising over 1,100 coral islands with only a fraction inhabited, the Maldives is recognized for its 26 atolls featuring multiple isles and lagoons. It also stands as the world's lowest and flattest country.

Traveling to this destination requires several flights from most major U.S. cities, typically taking around 24 hours to reach Male's Velana International Airport (MLE). Notable airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Emirates, and Turkish Airlines offer one-stop options from various U.S. locations.

Visitors are encouraged to plan their trips during the dry season from November to April when temperatures average in the mid-80s with less humidity and wind. However, traveling during the monsoon season between May and October presents opportunities to witness manta rays and whale sharks congregating in Hanifaru Bay, Baa Atoll.

The official language in the Maldives is Dhivehi or Maldivian, though English is widely spoken at resorts and tourist areas. The local currency is rufiyaa; however, prices at resorts are generally listed in dollars.

A variety of luxurious resorts dot the islands, offering experiences likened to stepping into a postcard. Noteworthy names include Joali Maldives and The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort among others. New properties like Hyatt Regency Samarafushi Maldives and Rosewood Ranfaru Resort are expected by 2027.

Although reaching this remote paradise involves extensive travel time, many find it worthwhile for its radiant sun, pristine beaches, biodiverse reefs, and high-end resorts offering unparalleled service.
