FedEx, one of the world's largest express transportation companies, announced plans to upgrade its Shanghai International Express and Cargo Hub at Pudong International Airport into an intercontinental transit center. This announcement was made during the opening ceremony of the "2024 North Bund International Shipping Forum" held in Shanghai. FedEx's Senior Vice President and President of China, Xu Baoyan, along with leaders from relevant government departments, officially launched this significant facility upgrade plan by lighting up a large screen at the forum.

The "2024 North Bund International Shipping Forum," co-hosted by the Ministry of Transport and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, focuses on building a new global shipping ecosystem through digitalization, intelligence, and sustainability. The forum aims to explore trends in the maritime and aviation industries worldwide while promoting international exchange and cooperation for sustainable development in China's transportation sector.

As one of the major outcomes announced at this year's forum, upgrading the Shanghai hub is part of FedEx's ongoing investment expansion in China. The enhanced intercontinental transit center will expand connections between Shanghai and second- and third-tier cities across mainland China, thus broadening its network reach. By leveraging FedEx's reliable global freight network and unique products and services, this facility will further enhance connectivity between China and international markets. It will support Chinese enterprises in expanding their global business efficiently while aiding Shanghai in becoming a comprehensive gateway hybrid international aviation hub.

Shanghai plays a critical strategic role within FedEx's global network as an important pivot for China's foreign trade and economic development. FedEx's journey in Shanghai began in 2004 when it established its China headquarters there; in 2018, the Shanghai International Express and Cargo Hub became operational as one of FedEx's key facilities in Asia-Pacific—currently the largest of its kind at Pudong International Airport. This year, FedEx announced the official opening of its new China headquarters in Shanghai to further deepen its presence in China and strengthen connections between China and the world.
