Las Vegas may soon have a new general aviation airport. The proposed Las Vegas Executive Airport has received a nod from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which stated, “After a thorough review, the FAA determined that the proposed Las Vegas Executive Airport would not affect the safety or efficiency of the surrounding airspace.” However, they emphasized that this does not equate to an outright approval. “This does not constitute an approval of the single-runway airport…Any construction, alteration to, or abandonment of the project airport requires notice to the FAA for aeronautical review,” they added.

The Clark County Commission had already given unanimous approval for construction permits in May. The planned location is about 30 miles west of Harry Reid International Airport (KLAS).

Rob Lauer, CEO of Las Vegas Spaceport, expressed optimism following the FAA's statement. He remarked that it “is a monumental step forward for the Las Vegas Executive Airport and the broader vision of the Las Vegas Spaceport.” Lauer highlighted that this development could significantly contribute to creating high-paying jobs in Nevada.

Before breaking ground in the third quarter, engineering and technical planning need completion. The initial phase includes plans for a 5,000-foot runway with an additional 8,000-foot runway planned later.

While clarifying details with AIN, the FAA mentioned receiving a proposal specifically for an airport rather than a spaceport. This distinction implies further approvals might be necessary down the line.

Las Vegas is currently served by Harry Reid International Airport (KLAS), Henderson Executive Airport (KHND), and North Las Vegas Airport (KVGT). All these facilities are managed by Clark County Department of Aviation.
