The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has launched a Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) clearinghouse to address concerns about the aviation industry's capacity to meet European mandates on SAF usage. This initiative mirrors similar efforts by the UK in April, aiming to facilitate the production and adoption of SAF.

The clearinghouse is designed to simplify regulatory processes for fuel producers by acting as a centralized hub. It will provide resources necessary for efficient standard evaluation under ASTM D4054, which is the standard for new SAF pathways. This includes partial funding for testing and report writing. Currently, SAF constitutes less than 0.05% of total EU aviation fuel consumption, highlighting the need for diverse production methods and new feedstocks to achieve mandated targets.

Maria Rueda, EASA’s director of strategy and safety management, emphasized the growing demand for SAF: “The demand for SAF will grow ever more to meet the goals set in the ReFuel EU Aviation Regulation and increasingly reduce the emissions from aviation.” She added that through this initiative, EASA aims to support the fuel industry in developing SAF for aviation: “Via the EU SAF Clearing House, EASA wants to ensure that the fuel industry gets the support needed to succeed in developing SAF for aviation so that their innovation efforts are not in vain and more SAF is brought to the market.”
