Southwest Airlines has announced an expansion of its flight schedule for the summer of 2025, introducing more than a dozen new red-eye flights. This move is part of the airline's first-ever overnight flying schedule, which will begin in the coming months.

The Dallas-based carrier extended its booking schedule through August 4, 2025, unveiling 13 new red-eye routes. These additions follow the 20 routes previously reported and mark Southwest's entry into overnight operations.

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) emerged as a significant beneficiary, receiving six new red-eye flights. "We could not be happier with the new Southwest service to the greater Washington, D.C., area via BWI," said Alan D. Wapner, president of the Ontario International Airport Authority Board of Airport Commissioners.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) will also see four new departures on the West Coast. The newly introduced routes include transcontinental flights from Long Beach Airport (LGB), Ontario International Airport (ONT), and San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to BWI, along with SFO to Nashville International Airport (BNA).

Additional red-eye services will resume or increase between various cities such as Honolulu's Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Lihue Airport (LIH) in Hawaii to Las Vegas' Harry Reid International Airport (LAS), and several others connecting SEA with major hubs like Chicago's Midway International Airport (MDW) and Houston's William P. Hobby Airport (HOU).

In total, Southwest plans to operate 33 red-eye flights next summer from cities on the West Coast and Hawaii. The airline aims to enhance its financial performance by optimizing aircraft utilization during overnight hours.

"In addition to reducing turn times, the introduction of red-eye flights is another key component of increasing asset productivity and improving the connectivity and efficiency of the network," stated Andrew Watterson, Southwest Chief Operating Officer.

Moreover, Southwest revealed a new nonstop route from Colorado Springs Airport (COS) to Cancun starting June 7. This seasonal service will run once weekly on Saturdays and expand Southwest's presence in Cancun despite overall reductions in other areas.

The announcement reflects Southwest’s strategy to improve operational efficiency while expanding its reach into popular destinations.
