Pratt & Whitney, a business of RTX, and Air New Zealand have announced the expansion of their Christchurch Engine Centre. The project involves a US$150 million investment to add maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities for the Pratt & Whitney GTF™ engine in New Zealand. The facility aims to handle up to 140 GTF engine overhauls annually by 2032.

Construction is set to begin this month, with the first GTF engine overhaul anticipated in late 2026. Established in 1948 by Air New Zealand, the Christchurch Engine Centre became a joint venture with Pratt & Whitney in 2001. The center currently employs over 400 staff and has serviced more than 1,500 V2500 engines.

"This project between Air New Zealand and global aviation leader Pratt & Whitney marks a significant investment to New Zealand's economy," said Christopher Luxon, Prime Minister of New Zealand. He added that it would expand aviation industrial capability and create 200 high-value jobs in Canterbury.

Shane Eddy, president of Pratt & Whitney, noted the strategic importance of investing in the Asia-Pacific region due to its projected aviation growth over the next two decades. "The Christchurch Engine Centre has a proven track record of delivering exceptional performance and quality with a highly capable workforce," he stated.

Air New Zealand Chair Dame Therese Walsh highlighted that the expansion will enable servicing of both V2500 engines on A320ceo aircraft and PW1100G-JM GTF engines on A320/A321neo aircraft within New Zealand. She emphasized the growing importance of this facility as Air New Zealand's fleet expands.

Christchurch Mayor Phil Mauger expressed optimism about the new jobs created by this investment: "The creation of 200 new jobs is great news for our local economy." He also noted that it further positions Christchurch as a technology and aerospace hub.

The expansion aligns with Pratt & Whitney's sustainability vision aimed at protecting the environment while ensuring employee health and safety. It also introduces innovations for greener operations at the facility.
