The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) has announced the opening of a new six-story parking garage at O'Hare International Airport's Terminal 5. This development is part of Mayor Brandon Johnson’s efforts to modernize the airport.

The newly constructed garage is the first to serve Terminal 5 and more than doubles the available parking capacity for domestic and international travelers. "Investments like this are an important complement to the transformational modernization happening across O’Hare Airport," stated Mayor Brandon Johnson. He emphasized the goal of ensuring a world-class traveling experience throughout all stages at the airport.

This $191 million project includes a parking guidance system that offers real-time information on space availability, along with 48 electric vehicle charging stations. The garage is connected to Terminal 5 by an enclosed pedestrian bridge on its first level. It replaces part of Lot D's surface parking but retains about 650 spaces for short- and long-term use.

CDA Commissioner Jamie L. Rhee commented, "With features like real-time parking guidance and electric vehicle charging stations, this new garage reflects our commitment to innovation and sustainability." She highlighted its role in providing convenience and accessibility from arrival onwards.

Designed by SCB, the structure features ornamental metal cladding and curves that contribute to its architectural appeal. The construction was managed by AECOM Hunt Clayco BOWA as Construction Manager at-Risk, with participation from 189 contractors, including minority-owned and women-owned firms, aligning with Mayor Johnson’s focus on diversity in airport projects. The venture has surpassed its minority business goal with a current rate of 34.8%.

Currently, five levels of the garage are operational for customers, while Level 6 will open later this month. Additional improvements include roadway re-striping to adjust lane capacity and expanding curbside areas with enhanced entry and exit lanes.

These enhancements are components of the broader O’Hare 21 program aimed at transforming O'Hare into a modern global hub for travelers.
