The Airbus A340-300, once the most popular variant of its series with 218 deliveries, now sees only 34 aircraft remaining active as of November 2024. This model is part of a family that includes four variants: the A340-200 and A340-600, which offer higher capacity and range upgrades.

European carriers operate the majority of these quadjets, with Lufthansa maintaining the largest fleet consisting of 13 active A340-300s. "The Airbus A340-300 was the most successful variant of the European planemaker's single-decker quadjet," according to company data.

Ch-aviation reports indicate that several other A340-300s are in maintenance or storage, potentially returning to service. The geographical distribution includes two operators in Africa, six in the Middle East, and four in Europe.

In Africa, South African Airways operates one example from 2005 for routes such as Johannesburg to Cape Town and Perth. Eswatini Air's aircraft serves government needs through the Umbutfo Eswatini Defence Force.

The Middle East hosts six operators including Mahan Air with eight aircraft—three currently active—and Kam Air with three operational examples. Other operators include Meraj Air, Qatar Amiri Flight, and Manasik Aviation each having one active aircraft.

In Europe, Lufthansa remains a significant operator along with Edelweiss Air and SWISS each maintaining multiple active examples. Plus Ultra Líneas Aéreas also flies one aircraft actively.

In South America, Conviasa holds several A340 models but has stored its single A340-300 since May 2023 while continuing operations with other variants like the A340-200s and -600s.

Production for this model ended in 2011 but it still remains functional across various airlines despite increased retirements during 2020's slowdown period.
