A recent study by Federal Express Corporation projects a significant increase in parcel deliveries across Europe during the festive season of 2024. The study, conducted by Effigy Consulting, predicts that parcel carriers will distribute 6.2 billion shipments from October to December, marking a 9% rise compared to the same period in 2023.

Effigy Consulting's analysis, based on its extensive courier, express and parcels (CEP) database with data points from over 300 carriers in 41 countries, attributes this growth to an uptick in e-commerce. Approximately 70% of these shipments are expected to be delivered directly to consumers.

Wouter Roels, Regional President of Europe at FedEx, stated: “Peak season is a critical time for the logistics sector and the countless businesses that we support. This year is expected to be the biggest since the pandemic for parcel deliveries, reflecting the strength of European ecommerce.”

The report highlights that around 30% of annual delivery volume occurs in the last quarter of the year. Business-to-business shipments account for nearly a fifth of activity during this peak period.

Roels emphasized: “Shipping across continents and countries is crucial to trade and growth, with this ‘golden quarter’ representing the difference between profit and loss for retailers and businesses.”

In terms of geographical distribution, the UK is expected to see 1.3 billion deliveries, followed by Germany with 1.1 billion and France with just over half a billion parcels.

The study also underscores Europe's role as an exporting region. Almost half a billion parcels are anticipated to be exports within Europe or beyond its borders.

Roels added: “This study also shows that Europe’s role as an exporting region should not be overlooked."

Overall, this forecast indicates robust activity in Europe's logistics sector during this year's peak season.
