The Avro Vulcan bomber, a crucial component of Britain's Cold War nuclear deterrent, utilized various camouflage schemes to adapt to its operational needs and evade enemy detection. Designed by A.V. Roe and Company, the Vulcan was part of the Royal Air Force's V-force, alongside the Valiant and Victor bombers. Initially crafted for high-altitude nuclear strikes, the Vulcan's capabilities were later adapted for low-level precision bombing missions.

Throughout its service, several paint schemes were applied to enhance its visual concealment in different roles and environments. These included Anti-Flash White, Standard Camouflage, Wraparound Camouflage, Arctic Camouflage, and a Falklands War-specific scheme. Each scheme served distinct purposes aligned with mission parameters and evolving battlefield roles.

The Anti-Flash White scheme was pivotal during the early 1960s for nuclear deterrence missions. It minimized heat absorption from potential nuclear detonations with reflective white paint combined with pale blue or pink roundels.

The Standard Camouflage scheme emerged as the Vulcan transitioned to low-level bombing in the 1960s. This combination of dark green and grey on top surfaces improved adaptability across European landscapes where radar evasion was crucial.

Wraparound Camouflage extended these colors across all surfaces to eliminate contrasting undersides, enhancing concealment from multiple angles in diverse terrains.

For arctic conditions or snow-laden environments, a temporary Arctic Camouflage featured a white coating over standard camouflage to minimize visibility against snowy backdrops.

During the 1982 Falklands War, Vulcans used a Falklands War Scheme adapted from standard camouflage for long-range missions over oceanic environments. This scheme included added countermeasures tailored for specific operational needs during Black Buck raids.

Martin Withers, an RAF Vulcan pilot stated: "If Britain had come under nuclear attack from the USSR, I am convinced that we would have launched with absolute determination to hit our assigned targets with very little concern for our own safety."

These color schemes highlight both the adaptability of the Avro Vulcan and strategic considerations by the RAF in tailoring visual concealment to varied mission demands throughout its decades of service.
