US President-elect Donald Trump's nomination of Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense has sparked criticism and surprise among both opponents and some allies. Hegseth, a Fox News commentator and former Army National Guard Major, lacks senior military or political experience, leading critics to question his qualifications for the role.

A Reuters report cites an unnamed senior Department of Defense official stating that Hegseth is "not even qualified for a far less senior job," while another described him as "the least qualified person" in the history of the position. As Secretary of Defense, Hegseth would oversee a budget exceeding $800 billion, 1.3 million active-duty service members, and nearly one million civilian military workers.

Hegseth has publicly supported Trump's intention to dismiss military leaders who back "woke" ideology and opposes what he perceives as the politicization of the military. Among those criticized by Hegseth is Air Force General C.Q. Brown, current chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. On a recent podcast, Hegseth suggested Brown's appointment was influenced by his race and called for his dismissal due to support for progressive policies.

Hegseth's views extend to opposition against women in combat roles and NATO. His appointment could affect U.S. assistance to Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia; he has expressed disapproval of President Biden's support for Ukraine.

Following Trump's announcement of Hegseth's nomination, news emerged about a sexual assault investigation involving Hegseth from October 2017 at a Hyatt Regency hotel where he was speaking at a conference. His attorney confirmed that a settlement was reached with the accuser without charges being filed.

Trump selected Hegseth on short notice, leaving insufficient time for thorough vetting by his transition team. Within 48 hours post-announcement, concerns about their choice surfaced with discussions on possibly withdrawing the nomination. However, Trump's communications director Steven Cheung defended Hegseth: "We look forward to his confirmation as United States Secretary of Defense so he can get started on Day One to Make America Safe and Great Again."

As Trump prepares for his second term in office, significant changes in U.S. military policy may occur, potentially including reduced support for Ukraine and efforts towards achieving a ceasefire.
