BermudAir, the young airline based in Bermuda, is working to enhance connectivity between the island and several key US destinations. CEO Adam Scott shared insights on the airline's strategy and future plans with Simple Flying.

Initially planned as a boutique all-business class airline, BermudAir faced seat delays and launched operations in September 2023 with two Embraer E175 aircraft configured in a dual-class cabin. The airline focuses on point-to-point services, analyzing current demand and historical traffic patterns to develop routes.

Scott aims to establish a presence in important markets by flying to airports where there is less competition from legacy airlines. Of the ten destinations planned for next summer, only two will face direct competition.

Discussing new flights to Raleigh-Durham, Scott noted that "Raleigh has actually been on our hit list for quite some time." He emphasized their commitment to year-round service, starting with twice-weekly flights and hoping to increase frequency over time.

The airline also serves secondary airports for major US cities. For instance, it flies into Westchester Airport (HPN) instead of New York JFK. Scott highlighted the convenience of smaller international airports: "If you're in Connecticut and fly with us out of Westchester, you can be in Bermuda by the time you'd otherwise be checking in at JFK."

Scott addressed the challenge of limited off-season flights from Bermuda: "Unless you're in New York, it's pretty difficult to get here consistently year round." Around 40% of outbound travel originates from Bermuda itself. Year-round service is crucial as residents frequently travel for work and leisure.

Despite seasonal challenges, BermudAir has introduced package holidays to boost off-season bookings. The airline currently operates two leased Embraer E175 aircraft and plans to add more next year. Delays have affected their pod-style seating installation for business class cabins but they plan an upgrade soon.

Scott praised their onboard experience: "We also...have a fantastic onboard product in terms of food and beverage...sourced here in Bermuda." When asked about fleet expansion specifics, he confirmed sticking with Embraer's E jet family but hinted at slightly larger models than the E175.

Bermuda offers US Customs Preclearance at its airport, simplifying return travel for US visitors. Scott remarked: "One of the great things about Bermuda is that we also have preclearance."

Reflecting on BermudAir's first year, Scott expressed pride in his team's efforts: "The one thing that really differentiates us...is that when you get on one of our aircraft, our staff actually smile at the passengers."
