For the upcoming summer season, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines have announced plans to expand their services to Italy. These expansions include both new routes and increased flight frequencies. The main Italian airports involved are Rome Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport (FCO) and Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP), with additional services planned for Naples International Airport (NAP).

Data from Cirium indicates that from June to August 2024, these airlines scheduled an average of 244 weekly flights, translating to 62,601 weekly seats on average. However, by the same period in 2025, they plan an increase to 293 weekly flights and 73,587 seats on average. Notably, two new Sicilian airports—Vincenzo Bellini Catania Airport (CTA) and Palermo Falcone Borsellino Airport (PMO)—will receive direct connections from the US.

Sicily has seen a rise in tourism interest. According to Eurostat data between 2020 and 2023, nights spent at tourist accommodations grew significantly from 6.6 million to 16.4 million.

ITA Airways will continue its service from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Rome-Fiumicino since March 2022. Other airlines like La Compagnie, Emirates with its fifth-freedom route via Milan-Malpensa, and Norse Atlantic Airways will also operate between Italy and the US in summer 2025.

American Airlines announced four new routes starting May 2025: Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) to Naples; Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to Venice; Miami to Rome; Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) to Rome. "American will operate flights from FCO to more destinations in the United States than any other U.S. airline," stated the company.

Delta Air Lines is introducing new routes including its first-ever non-stop service to Catania, Sicily. Joe Esposito of Delta said that alongside expanded connectivity features like free international Wi-Fi, "we’re ensuring our customers enjoy the best in connectivity and comfort."

United Airlines' summer schedule includes a new route from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Palermo three times per week during the summer season as well as a daily seasonal route from Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) to Venice.
