Federal Express Corporation has released findings from its latest survey, shedding light on Canadian consumers' holiday shopping plans. The FedEx Canada Online Holiday Shopping Survey indicates that 54% of shoppers intend to maintain their spending levels from last year, while 13% plan to increase their expenditure despite economic challenges like inflation.

The survey also highlights a decline in the number of respondents planning to cut back on holiday spending, dropping from 37% in 2023 to 33% in 2024. Inflation and increased living costs are cited by 64% as reasons for reduced spending, followed by anticipated winter expenses (56%) and fewer gift recipients (34%).

Ann-Marie McIntosh, Vice President Global Brand at FedEx, remarked on the positive outlook: “While financial constraints are still top of mind, it’s very promising to see an increase in purchase intent leading into the holiday shopping season.”

FedEx is addressing consumer concerns about package theft with digital tools such as picture proof of delivery and real-time tracking through its mobile app. Despite a decrease in reported package thefts—from 16% in 2023 to 10% in 2024—67% of online shoppers remain wary of porch pirates. However, many continue to shop online due to e-commerce convenience.

McIntosh emphasized the importance of tracking tools: “Canadian consumers are proactive and tech-savvy when it comes to tracking needs... The new and improved capabilities at FedEx tracking and the FedEx Mobile app provide better visibility on shipments.”

Additional survey insights reveal that early shopping is a trend among Canadians, with 77% starting before December. Many aim to save money by seeking sales (55%) or shopping online for better prices (47%).

The survey was conducted between October 9-11, 2024, involving a representative sample of Canadian online shoppers through the Angus Reid Forum.

Federal Express Corporation remains committed to enhancing customer experience globally with its extensive delivery network.
