Federal Express Corporation, a leading global courier company, has conducted a survey revealing insights into Canadian holiday shopping trends for 2024. The study indicates that despite inflation concerns, Canadians are determined to maintain or increase their festive spending compared to last year. According to the FedEx Canada online shopping survey, more than half of respondents plan to keep their holiday budget at last year's level, with 13% intending to spend more.

The survey shows a slight decrease in the percentage of people planning to reduce their holiday spending compared to the previous year. In 2023, 37% anticipated cutting back on expenses for the holidays in 2024; this figure has now dropped to 33%. Among those considering reduced spending, inflation and rising living costs are cited by 64%, followed by winter living expenses at 56%, and fewer gift recipients at 34%.

Ann-Marie McIntosh, Vice President of Global Brand at FedEx, noted: "Despite financial constraints remaining a concern, it is very encouraging to see an increase in purchase intent as the holidays approach. Our data reveals that 66% of Canadians surveyed do not feel stressed about holiday shopping. They adopt proven strategies such as waiting for major promotions and checking off names on their lists to optimize their end-of-year budgets."

Package theft remains a concern for shoppers; however, digital tracking tools provide reassurance. FedEx is enhancing customer experience with various digital tools offering full shipment visibility from warehouse to doorstep. The FedEx Mobile app includes features like photo proof of delivery and near real-time updates.

Eighty-one percent of survey respondents plan to shop with online retailers offering delivery tracking options. Four out of five have used alerts and notifications over the past year. Furthermore, one-quarter check their shipment status multiple times daily.

Reported package thefts decreased from 16% in 2023 to 10% in 2024. Despite this decline, package theft remains a worry for 67% of shoppers. However, convenience keeps them shopping online as usual.

Ms. McIntosh added: "Canadian consumers are proactive and tech-savvy in meeting their needs efficiently." She highlighted FedEx's commitment "to perfecting customer experience through a suite of digital tools," ensuring increased shipment visibility.

Additional findings from the FedEx Canada Holiday Shopping Survey include:

- Twenty-four percent reported an increase in stolen goods over the past year.

- Twenty-nine percent experienced theft while at home; thirteen percent recorded incidents on video.

- Over seventy-seven percent plan early holiday shopping before December.

- Fifty-five percent will seek promotions; forty-seven percent will shop online for better prices.

The survey was conducted from October 9-11, 2024 among members of the Angus Reid Forum representing Canada's demographics.

FedEx Corporation provides fast and reliable delivery across more than 220 countries with its global network accelerating urgent shipments worldwide.
