The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, typically associated with long-haul international flights, is increasingly being used for domestic routes within the United States. According to data from aviation analytics company Cirium, over 2,750 domestic Boeing 787 flights are scheduled in the US this December. These flights are operated by American Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, and United Airlines.

United Airlines accounts for more than half of these flights and operates all three variants of the Dreamliner. American Airlines is noted as the largest operator of domestic 787-8 flights. Hawaiian Airlines, a newcomer to operating the 787, flies exclusively on routes to Los Angeles and Phoenix.

The busiest domestic route next month involves a United Airlines service between Newark Liberty (EWR) and Los Angeles (LAX). This coast-to-coast nonstop route primarily utilizes United's 787-10 fleet with additional daily services by the 787-9. The route will offer over 41,000 seats each way with up to five daily departures.

Another significant route served by United is from Newark to San Francisco (SFO), which ranks as the second-busiest with two daily 787-9 flights providing a total of 16,705 seats each way.

American Airlines employs both its 787-8 and -9 aircraft on twice-daily flights between Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) and Philadelphia (PHL), offering a total of 16,089 seats each way on this shorter route among the top five busiest.

United also operates daily roundtrips between Chicago O'Hare (ORD) and Honolulu (HNL), increasing to two daily flights during peak holiday periods. The airline uses its larger capacity 318-seater 787-10 aircraft for this long-distance journey.

Additionally, United offers up to twice-daily services between Los Angeles (LAX) and Washington Dulles (IAD) using its 787-9s. During peak holiday times, an extra flight will be added on this route that provides a total of 11,051 seats each way.

Hawaiian Airlines runs two daily Dreamliner routes from its Honolulu hub to Los Angeles and Phoenix but plans to discontinue Dreamliner services to Phoenix next year. Hawaiian became only the third US airline to operate the Boeing 787 earlier this year in April.
