United Airlines cuts three routes from Newark hub amid strategic shifts

United Airlines is adjusting its domestic route network, focusing on its Northeastern U.S. hubs. The airline will cut three routes from Newark Liberty International Airport while increasing capacity at Washington Dulles International Airport.

The changes involve discontinuing services from Newark to Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport, Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, and Albany International Airport this spring. According to Ishrion Aviation, these adjustments aim to optimize United's operations at the congested and slot-restricted Newark airport.

Service from Newark to Providence will end on March 29, 2025. In March, United plans 58 flights each way on this route using the CRJ550 aircraft, offering a total of 5,800 seats. On March 30, 2025, United will introduce a fourth daily flight from Providence to Washington Dulles with various aircraft types initially but transitioning exclusively to the CRJ550 in April.

Similarly, service from Manchester-Boston Regional Airport will cease on March 29, 2025. In April, United will operate two daily flights between Washington Dulles and Manchester-Boston with a total of 120 monthly frequencies.

United is also ending its Newark-Albany service as of March 29, 2025. This route was scheduled for a mix of CRJ550 and Embraer E170 aircraft over 116 frequencies in March.

Newark Liberty plays a crucial role in United's network as it connects to both domestic and international markets like New York City and serves as a gateway to Europe. However, due to space limitations and high traffic volumes at Newark airport, United has been adjusting its network by cutting certain routes and upgauging others.
