Since the start of 2024, Lufthansa Express Rail has transported 432,000 travelers to and from Frankfurt Airport, surpassing last year's figures by 28% as of October. By the end of the year, over 500,000 bookings are expected. This marks a record in the over two-decade partnership between Lufthansa and Deutsche Bahn (DB).

The demand has led to an expansion of feeder destinations to Frankfurt Airport, one of Europe's largest airports. This year alone saw an increase from four to a total of 28 cities within Germany being connected. New additions include Augsburg, Siegburg/Bonn, Wolfsburg, and Essen. The number of cities linked by Lufthansa Express Rail now exceeds those connected by flight. The service also includes international routes such as between Munich Central Station and Zurich Airport with boarding available in Bregenz, Austria.

Michael Peterson from DB stated: "More and more people are taking advantage of a climate-friendly journey to their flight. Together with Lufthansa, we are delighted with the passenger record." He emphasized that the intermodal offering is growing continuously.

Dieter Vranckx from Deutsche Lufthansa AG commented: "We are constantly expanding our cooperation with Deutsche Bahn and thus offering our customers flexible travel options." He highlighted that future improvements depend on efficient infrastructure like connecting Munich airport to Deutsche Bahn's long-distance services.

Lufthansa and DB have been providing combined train and flight tickets for over 20 years. The partnership extends beyond Lufthansa Group airlines; other Star Alliance members now use this service due to DB's membership as an intermodal partner in Star Alliance. United Airlines began using it at the end of last year with more airlines expected to join.

The Lufthansa Group operates globally with significant revenue generated in its Passenger Airlines segment alongside Logistics and Maintenance sectors.
