United Airlines is making adjustments to its flight network, involving both route cuts and additions. The airline plans to discontinue three routes from Newark Liberty International Airport effective March 29, 2025. These routes include flights to Albany, Manchester in New Hampshire, and Providence. Previously operated by United Express regional partners, these routes were intended to enhance connectivity through United's Newark hub.

Despite the cuts, there are new developments for travelers from Manchester. Starting March 30, 2025, United will introduce a nonstop service from Dulles International Airport near Washington D.C. to Manchester-Boston Regional Airport. This route will be managed by CommuteAir using an ERJ-145 regional jet with twice-daily flights initially and increasing to three times daily in May.

Ted Kitchens, the director of Manchester airport, expressed optimism about this change: "This route swap will bring the highly requested route to Dulles back to MHT. This will open up 65 domestic and international destinations with just one quick stop in D.C."

United is also expanding its reach into Canada with two new routes to Edmonton International Airport from Houston and Chicago hubs starting in spring 2025. The Houston service begins on May 22 while the Chicago service starts on May 24.

These moves come as Canadian low-cost carrier WestJet plans to start service between Chicago and Edmonton on June 4, prompting a competitive response from United which will begin its own flights a few days earlier than WestJet.

United's actions suggest it is prepared for competition as noted by recent similar responses like adding high-capacity jets when Alaska Airlines launched a new route last year.
