Air India is set to utilize former Vistara Airbus A320neo aircraft on domestic routes following the merger of the two full-service carriers. This strategic move aims to enhance Air India's domestic network by leveraging Vistara's premium cabin offerings.

Starting December 1, 2024, these aircraft will operate on routes connecting major Indian cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. The flights will carry Air India's 'AI' code along with a four-digit number starting with '2'. The ex-Vistara A320s offer eight business class seats with up to 41 inches of pitch, 24 premium economy seats with 33 inches of pitch, and 132 economy class seats providing up to 29 inches of pitch.

Campbell Wilson, Air India CEO and Managing Director stated: “The merger of Vistara into Air India has unlocked many new opportunities to improve our customer offering. By combining the strengths of both full-service carriers, we are able to consolidate our best narrowbody offering on routes where there is desire for a high-frequency, full-service product.”

Wilson also mentioned that as more aircraft are acquired and retrofitted in 2025, the airline plans to extend its reach to additional cities. The updated domestic network will be available across various booking platforms including Air India's website and mobile app.

The integration brings together Vistara's business class and premium economy services under the Air India brand while maintaining optimized flight schedules without reducing frequencies. Passengers can expect enhanced service levels including comfortable cabins, complimentary meals, lounge access for premium travelers at major airports, and convenient global connections.

Post-merger operations now cover 55 domestic and 48 international destinations with a total of 312 routes and approximately 8,300 weekly flights. On key routes like Delhi-Mumbai or Delhi-Bengaluru alone there are over a thousand two-way flights each week.

Despite this shift towards single-aisle aircraft on metro city routes using ex-Vistara planes; one widebody flight per day remains between select cities utilizing Boeing or Airbus models under AI codes as part of Star Alliance offerings.

The merger discussions began over two years ago culminating last month when it was finalized marking an important step in transforming Air India post-privatization along similar lines followed by earlier consolidation among low-cost arms such as Air India Express merging into AIX Connect (formerly known as AirAsia India).
