Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) is set to expand its network in East Asia with the introduction of a direct route between Copenhagen Kastrup Airport and Seoul Incheon International Airport. The new service is expected to commence on September 12, 2025, pending final governmental approval. The airline plans to operate four weekly flights during the summer and three during the winter using Airbus A350 aircraft.

The move marks SAS's first direct connection between Scandinavia and South Korea, as no other airline currently offers such a route. This expansion aims to bolster Copenhagen's status as a hub for intercontinental travel. Anko van der Werff, President & CEO of SAS, commented on the development: "This new route highlights our commitment to meeting customer demand and enhancing connectivity between two dynamic regions. Seoul, renowned as a global center of culture, innovation, and business, is a strategic addition to our growing network."

SAS is part of the SkyTeam alliance and sees this new route as an opportunity to enhance connectivity from Scandinavia to key global destinations. Van der Werff added: "As a proud SkyTeam member, this route further strengthens the seamless connectivity we provide, linking Scandinavia to key destinations across the globe. We are excited to welcome passengers on board this landmark service."

The addition of Seattle in May 2025 will increase SAS's intercontinental offerings to 14 destinations next year. Despite expanding into East Asia, SAS continues to focus heavily on transatlantic routes with nine US destinations including New York and Los Angeles among others.

In September 2024, the most significant US-bound route by Available Seat Miles was from Copenhagen to Los Angeles. The introduction of Seoul will bring SAS's routes in East and Southeast Asia to three, including existing services to Tokyo Haneda Airport and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

Despite some financial challenges, SAS remains committed to maintaining its strong presence in the US market while exploring new opportunities in other regions.
