American Airlines has announced it will cease its flight service between Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Tulum International Airport in Mexico. The route, which was introduced in March 2024 along with services from Dallas-Fort Worth and Miami, is set to be suspended on February 13, 2025. This decision comes less than a year after the launch of these international flights to Tulum.

The airline's decision to cut the Charlotte-Tulum route is part of a broader evaluation of its network. American Airlines stated that the change is due to "a continuous evaluation of our network." Brian Znotins, American's network chief, elaborated on this by saying, “I think the whole industry getting in there all at the same time was too much capacity to absorb all at once we need to get people more familiar with Tulum - there are plenty of people familiar with Tulum, but we had way more seats than people familiar with Tulum, so you're seeing us and the whole industry scale back and take a step back a bit.”

Despite this suspension, American Airlines will continue operating flights to Tulum from Miami and Dallas. Passengers affected by the discontinuation of the Charlotte service will be notified by American Airlines and accommodated on alternative flights.

Tulum has become an increasingly popular destination for travelers seeking picturesque beaches and lush forests. The recent operational status of its airport has further boosted tourism in the region.

While Charlotte loses this connection to Mexico, it will gain another international link next summer when American Airlines launches a daily flight to Athens, Greece starting June 5 as part of its European expansion plan.

In addition to these changes, American Airlines has added three new routes for next year: Chicago O'Hare-Bismarck and Chicago O'Hare-Boise starting June 5 with daily Envoy Air E175 services; Phoenix Sky Harbor-Appleton commencing February 15 as a Saturday-only service.

Other airlines have also expanded their networks. Delta Air Lines introduced routes including Austin-Jacksonville (May 7), New York LaGuardia-Lexington (May 7), and New York LaGuardia-Huntsville (April 14). United Airlines added Chicago O'Hare-Edmonton (May 24), Houston Intercontinental-Edmonton (May 22), and Washington Dulles-Manchester (NH) (May 30).
