A Sun Country Airlines Boeing 737-800 experienced engine issues shortly after departing from Phoenix on a flight to Minneapolis, leading the aircraft to return safely to its departure airport. The incident occurred on November 26th, and there were no reported injuries among the passengers or crew.

The flight, identified as SCX606, took off from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport at 17:12 local time and returned for landing just 15 minutes later. According to Flightradar24 data, the aircraft made one circuit before landing on runway 26. This quick return suggests that the plane was below landing weight and did not need additional time to burn fuel.

Sun Country Airlines released a statement explaining that "our pilots followed their standard procedures, and the flight returned to PHX where it landed safely and taxied to its gate." The airline confirmed that all passengers were deplaned without incident and were flown to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport the following morning on a different aircraft. "There were 174 passengers and six crew members onboard," added Sun Country Airlines.

The Boeing 737-800 involved in this incident is registered as N849SY and is equipped with two CFM International CFM56-7B26/3 turbofan engines. At nearly ten years old, it was initially ordered by Norwegian Air Shuttle AOC before being delivered to Sun Country Airlines in April 2022.

Passengers reported hearing a loud bang accompanied by a flash of light shortly after takeoff. Whitney Moore, one of the passengers onboard, described her experience: "We heard this loud boom or bang and saw a flash of light... you just kind of felt us not going upwards."

Moore also noted some communication challenges following the unscheduled landing as travelers awaited confirmation about their continued journey during a busy holiday week.

Sun Country Airlines stated that passenger safety remains their priority while they investigate the cause of this engine event through an inspection conducted by their maintenance team.
