The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, commonly known as the "Warthog," is a twin-engine attack aircraft developed for the United States Air Force (USAF) by Fairchild Republic. Designed primarily for close air support (CAS) operations, the A-10 assists ground troops and targets enemy forces, tanks, and armored vehicles.

During its service history, the A-10 has played a role in several critical missions, including Operation Desert Storm and the intervention against Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. The development of this aircraft began during the Vietnam War when there was a need for a dedicated attack aircraft due to limitations in existing designs like the Douglas A-1 Skyraider.

The US military recognized gaps in escort and fire suppression roles while exploring new attack aircraft designs. This led to the introduction of helicopters like Bell UH-1 Iroquois and AH-1 Cobra to fulfill gunship roles temporarily. However, these developments prompted further studies that concluded a need for a specialized CAS aircraft.

In 1966, design efforts commenced under the A-X program with over 20 defense contractors involved. By January 1973, after comprehensive evaluations, the USAF selected the A-10 as their primary CAS aircraft. The first production model flew in October 1975 with deliveries starting in March 1976.

Recent developments indicate changes in deployment strategies for USAF's fleet of Warthogs. Starting January next year, plans are underway to transition away from 24 A-10s stationed at Osan Air Base in South Korea. These will be replaced by upgraded F-16s and newer generation F-35s and F-15EXs. Lt. Gen. David Iverson stated that these transitions aim to "significantly enhance our overall air combat capabilities" with advanced avionics systems bringing older models closer to fifth-generation standards.

Iverson emphasized that these new aircraft would provide "reliable and flexible combat capabilities" along with improved stealth features and strike precision through enhanced sensors on platforms like the F-35.
