Naval Air Station Whiting Field, located near Milton in Santa Rosa County, Florida, is a key training base for the United States Navy (USN), United States Marine Corps (USMC), and the United States Coast Guard (USCG). The facility spans approximately 12,000 acres and works alongside Naval Air Station Corpus Christi in Texas to provide essential training for military aviators.

North Whiting Field (KNSE) serves as the primary location where aspiring aviators from these branches receive their initial flight training. Trainees learn to fly using the Beechcraft T-6 Texan II aircraft. This model was chosen by the US Navy as a modern replacement for its predecessor, the Beechcraft T-34 Mentor trainer aircraft. The T-6 Texan II is equipped with a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-68 turboprop engine and features tandem seating for two pilots.

South Whiting Field (KNDZ) focuses on advanced helicopter pilot training using the Bell TH-57 Sea Ranger. This phase of training includes instruction on various maneuvers and procedures such as hovering, confined-area landings, and instrument navigation. The comprehensive six-month program prepares pilots for operational duties.

The station's name honors Kenneth Whiting, a pioneer in both submarine and aviation fields. Commissioned in 1943 by Rear Admiral George D. Murray, it reflects Whiting's contributions to naval aviation development during his career.

During World War II, NAS Whiting Field served as a prisoner-of-war camp before transitioning into a jet pilot training base post-war. It also hosted the Blue Angels Navy Flight Exhibition Team until their relocation to NAS Pensacola.

Today, NAS Whiting Field is responsible for over 60% of all primary flight training across the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard branches. Training Air Wing Five operates at this site with 142 T-6 Texan II aircraft for fixed-wing instruction and 112 TH-57 Sea Ranger helicopters for rotary-wing lessons. Plans are underway to replace the TH-57 with the TH-73A Thrasher helicopter.

As one of the busiest Naval Air Stations globally, NAS Whiting Field aims to produce highly skilled naval aviators annually by graduating approximately 1,200 pilots from its programs.
