British Airways has announced the extension of its Engineering Cadet Scheme to New York, offering a fully funded program aimed at training future aviation engineers. The scheme, in partnership with the Aviation Institute of Maintenance (AIM), will provide six students with full scholarships, paving the way for potential employment with British Airways.

The five-year program includes two years of foundational training at AIM followed by three years of "intensive onboarding training" at British Airways' London Heathrow Airport facility. This initiative marks British Airways as the first international carrier to partner with AIM for such a scheme.

Andy Best, Chief Technical Officer at British Airways, emphasized the importance of investing in future technicians: "As we have seen through our exceptional Engineering apprentice scheme in the UK, investing in future technicians is vital, and this program will aid in building a pipeline of future engineers in bases across America."

Applications are open to students from AIM campuses until December 20th, 2024. Eligible candidates must complete AIM's A&P program with a minimum GPA of 2.8 and demonstrate a strong interest in aviation engineering.

British Airways plans to expand this initiative to other US cities next year. The airline considers North America its most profitable market and intends to operate over 400 weekly flights during peak periods next summer.

Cadets will gain practical experience by working alongside BA's US-based engineer team. After completing the program, they will begin work as AMTs at New York JFK and Newark Liberty airports. They will maintain BA's transatlantic fleet and assist partner airlines.

One cadet from Chicago praised the program for its comprehensive support: "above and beyond" expectations. Benefits for successful applicants include tuition reimbursement, medical and dental coverage, paid leave, a 401k plan, travel benefits, and opportunities for career advancement within British Airways.
