Rakuten is offering a special promotion for new members and those who refer friends, available until December 16. New users who join Rakuten and spend at least $40 at eligible retailers within their first 90 days will receive a one-time bonus of $40. This offer includes well-known merchants such as Walmart, Target, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Lowe's.

Existing Rakuten members can also benefit by referring friends. By sharing a personal referral link, both the referrer and the new member can earn a $40 bonus once the new member spends $40 within 90 days.

Historically, Rakuten has offered referral bonuses of $30 and other incentives requiring more spending to achieve similar rewards. The current offer presents an opportunity for additional savings during holiday shopping.

Rakuten functions as an online shopping portal that partners with various retailers to provide cash back on purchases initiated through its platform. Users can install a browser extension for easy access to potential rebates while shopping directly on merchant sites.

The company earns commissions from partnered retailers for sales generated through its platform, which are then partially shared with customers as cash back. This arrangement benefits both consumers and retailers by driving additional business.

For those interested in maximizing their rewards, Rakuten allows switching from cash back to earning American Express Membership Rewards points. However, initial bonuses from referrals are only available as cash back.

Users should consider comparing potential earnings with other platforms like airline shopping portals before making purchases through Rakuten.

Several credit cards may complement these offers by providing extra rewards on purchases made via Rakuten. Examples include Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card and Citi Double Cash Card among others.

In conclusion, this promotional offer is straightforward and provides an easy way to earn extra cash or points during online shopping by signing up or referring friends to Rakuten.
