Tampa International Airport has unveiled new renderings of its future Airside D building, a $1.5 billion expansion project that is currently at the 30 percent design stage. The full design is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, with groundbreaking scheduled for December 18th. The new facility is anticipated to open in 2028.

The Airside D building will include 16 gates for both international and domestic flights within its 600,000 square feet area. It will feature two levels and a mezzanine large enough to accommodate two airport lounges. Upon completion, it will be connected to the main terminal via a shuttle service and can handle narrowbody and widebody aircraft.

Recent renderings highlight several features of the building, such as an international arrival customs processing area, departure lounges, glass boarding bridges, and shopping and dining facilities. The interior aims to maintain a naturalistic feel with high ceilings and panoramic views of the runway.

While specific airlines have not been confirmed for the new Airside D, an anchor tenant is expected to be announced soon. This tenant will also operate one of the two planned airport lounges.

The project marks Tampa International's first new Airside in nearly twenty years and comes amid significant growth for the airport. Passenger capacity is projected to increase from 25 million to 35 million annually by 2037. Previously, an older Airside D was demolished in 2007; its former location has since served as an aircraft hardstand.

Construction company Hensel Phelps leads the project with involvement from architecture and engineering firms HNTB and Gensler. This expansion represents the third phase of Tampa International's Master Plan following other major developments at the airport.

Additionally, changes in leadership are on the horizon for Tampa International Airport as Michael Stephens was recently appointed as CEO following Joe Lopano's upcoming departure in February 2025.
