When planning a flight, the cost of the ticket can depend on both the airline and the airport from which you are departing. Many travelers prefer to fly out of their nearest airport, but choosing a less convenient one might save money.

The United States Department of Transportation recently analyzed average fares from 150 busy airports across the country. Tallahassee International Airport (TLH) in Florida topped the list with an average ticket price of $561. Despite handling nearly a million passengers annually and seeing a 13% increase in traffic, TLH remains costly. Factors contributing to this include its status as Florida's state capital and proximity to Florida State University, alongside limited nearby alternatives like Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport.

Following TLH is Huntsville International Airport (HSV) in Alabama, where tickets average $561.69. HSV serves many business travelers from companies like NASA, Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman.

Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport (CHA) in Tennessee ranks third with an average fare of $528.25. It primarily competes with Allegiant Air while being more accessible than airports over 100 miles away in Nashville and Atlanta.

Tri-Cities Airport (PSC) in Washington comes fourth at $523.54 per ticket despite increased passenger numbers and new service by Alaska Airlines. Its remote location contributes to high prices.

Finally, Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) in South Carolina averages $521.87 per ticket due to its status as a state capital with significant business travel demand.

Ticket prices are influenced by factors such as destination distance affecting fuel costs, competition among airlines, taxes, and operating expenses at airports.

Travelers looking to save on airfare should consider booking early, being flexible with travel dates, avoiding peak seasons like holidays or school vacations when airlines charge more due to higher demand.
