On April 15, 2019, a fire severely damaged Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. The historic structure's bell towers survived, but its spire and roof collapsed, leaving behind toxic lead dust.

After more than five years of restoration work, the cathedral reopened on Saturday for exclusive celebrations attended by approximately 50 heads of state, including French President Emmanuel Macron. Due to security measures, the Ile de la Cite area around Notre Dame was restricted to invited guests and residents over the weekend. The cathedral will open to the public on Monday.

Inside the restored cathedral, notable changes include a new altar designed by French artist Guillaume Bardet. The interior also features a bronze baptismal font and other liturgical furnishings. The limestone walls have been cleaned of fire residue and grime accumulated over centuries.

French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte visited before the reopening to view a new reliquary for the Crown of Thorns created by Sylvain Dubuisson. This shrine is made from cedar wood similar to that saved from the fire. On December 13, the Crown of Thorns will be returned during a special ceremony.

The grand organ with 8,000 pipes had been dismantled for cleaning due to lead dust contamination after the collapse of the roof. Meanwhile, stained-glass rose windows survived but required thorough cleaning.

A bell used during the Paris Olympic Games was placed in one of Notre Dame's bell towers ahead of reopening. However, these towers remain closed until further notice as per information from Paris' tourist office.

Although visitors can now access Notre Dame's interior again, scaffolding remains outside as restoration continues on facades and flying buttresses using funds raised after the fire amounting nearly 1 billion euros (about $1.06 billion).

Following opening weekend events are planned at Notre Dame such as welcoming local merchants/residents (December 11), celebrating Feast Of Our Lady Of Guadalupe (December 12) alongside returning Crown
