Are the A-10 Warthog Thunderbolt II and AH-64 Apache attack helicopter obsolete? The answer is not straightforward. It depends on the mission set, as military equipment must adapt to remain relevant on modern battlefields.

Nicholas Theodore Moran, known online as The Chieftan, recently discussed why the Apache is not considered obsolete. He highlighted that using Apaches in large-scale combat today could be "almost suicidal" due to the proliferation of air defense systems and anti-tank missiles like the Javelin. Moran suggested, "If you really need to send a slow-flying aircraft with anti-tank missiles into that environment, save a life or two and send [a drone]."

Maj. Gen. James P. Isenhower III explained that Apaches are now used for deep penetration missions behind enemy lines rather than direct support roles. He noted that during Red Flag exercises, Apaches demonstrated their capability by penetrating 566 kilometers round trip with Air Force support.

The A-10 Warthog faces challenges in adapting to new roles. Despite being built around its autocannon, it rarely uses it in practice. Professor Justin Bronks from RUSI stated that the Warthog's gun is used "except in extremely niche scenarios where you really need dangerous close fires."

The future of these aircraft depends on their ability to find new roles or operate in permissive environments.
