San Antonio International Airport is set to begin construction on a new terminal, with work starting on December 10, 2024. The project, estimated at $1.4 billion, aims to expand the airport's capacity by doubling its size through the addition of Terminal C. This expansion is part of a broader $2 billion initiative to prepare the airport for future demands.

The decision to build a new terminal was made in 2018 after considering two options: constructing a new terminal or relocating the entire airport. The city opted for the more cost-effective choice of building Terminal C. Upon completion, it is expected to create over 6,000 jobs and include features such as an outdoor courtyard for passengers post-security checks. The current plan targets a 2028 opening date and includes additional infrastructure like a parking garage and transportation center.

San Antonio International Airport has experienced significant growth in passenger numbers throughout 2024, setting records in each of the first ten months. In July alone, over one million passengers traveled through the airport.

However, there has been some contention regarding the new terminal plans from Southwest Airlines, which operates extensively at San Antonio International Airport. Southwest claims that promises were made by airport officials about transferring most or all of its ten gates to the new facility. As it stands now, Southwest will remain at Terminal A. A hearing related to this issue was scheduled but has been postponed.

Despite not being a hub for any major legacy carrier like Dallas-Fort Worth or Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport, San Antonio plays an important role in connecting Texas travelers globally. Southwest Airlines holds a dominant market share at San Antonio with 36%, followed by American Airlines with 20%.
