The situation in Haiti continues to affect air travel as American Airlines has decided to suspend its flights to the country indefinitely. This decision follows a series of incidents last month where US commercial airplanes were targeted by gunfire while landing in Haiti. The airline had initially suspended flights until early next year but has now extended this suspension without a specified end date.

American Airlines had previously canceled its nonstop service between Miami and Port-au-Prince, which was expected to resume in February. However, according to CBS News, an American Airlines spokesperson confirmed that the suspension will continue indefinitely. Although there are no immediate plans to restart services, the airline may consider resuming flights possibly by late 2025.

In response to these events, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) initially banned US carriers from flying to Haiti pending a safety review. The ban was later revised, allowing flights to six airports in northern Haiti but maintaining the suspension for Port-au-Prince's main airport.

The November incidents involved aircraft from Spirit Airlines, American Airlines, and JetBlue being hit by bullets. On November 12, a Spirit Airlines Airbus A320neo approaching Port-Au-Prince was fired upon, resulting in injuries to a flight attendant and damage to the aircraft. Similarly, an American Airlines Boeing 737 MAX was found with bullet damage after landing from Miami. JetBlue also reported one of its planes being struck during Flight 935 from Haiti to New York.

Despite these revisions by the FAA, there is little interest among US carriers in resuming operations in Haiti at this time. No announcements have been made regarding any potential return of services.
