The United States hosts a number of regional airlines that operate under the banners of major carriers, such as United Airlines and American Airlines. Many passengers are often unaware that their flights are conducted by different operators than those selling the tickets. These regional airlines typically use liveries similar to their associated major carriers, but there are ways to distinguish between them.

Regional airlines have been part of the aviation landscape since its early days when aircraft had limited range and capacity. The deregulation of American aviation in 1978 allowed for greater expansion and flexibility in route selection, but also led to the creation of the Essential Air Service Program to ensure continued service to smaller towns.

Today, regional carriers like SkyWest Airlines and Envoy Air operate aircraft seating between 50 and 76 passengers on behalf of larger airlines. These planes can fly up to 1,611 miles within the U.S.

"United has been chasing expansion," according to recent reports. The airline has significantly increased its fleet and routes post-pandemic, with more than 4,500 daily flights now offered. Data from Cirium shows that over 55,000 out of United's 128,787 scheduled flights this month are operated by five regional carriers: CommuteAir, GoJet Airlines, Mesa Airlines, Republic Airways, and SkyWest Airlines.

SkyWest is notable for having some aircraft with its own livery featuring a navy blue tail with "SkyWest" painted on it. Mesa Airlines uses a black tail design while CommuteAir recently introduced a unique livery with yellow accents on an Embraer E170.

American Airlines remains the world's largest airline despite United's growth efforts. It operates through wholly-owned subsidiaries Envoy Air, Piedmont Airlines, PSA Airlines as well as other partners like Air Wisconsin Airlines under the American Eagle brand.

Delta Air Lines utilizes Endeavor Air as its sole wholly-owned subsidiary among several regional operators under the Delta Connection brand. Endeavor is headquartered in Minneapolis and is known for operating Bombardier CRJ900s extensively across North America.

Alaska Airlines relies on Horizon Air—its wholly-owned subsidiary—and SkyWest for regional operations primarily concentrated in the Western U.S., though it maintains transcontinental routes as well.
