John Glenn Columbus International Airport has commenced construction on a new terminal, marking a significant development in its ongoing transformation. The groundbreaking ceremony, held on December 9, 2024, was attended by approximately 300 guests. The project is valued at nearly $2 billion and aims to enhance the airport experience for travelers.

Joseph R. Nardone, President and CEO of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority (CRAA), expressed gratitude towards all involved parties: "Our new terminal is only possible thanks to the support of our many partners, community members, and airport employees, who have all worked alongside us as we officially kick off construction today."

The new terminal will significantly increase capacity from the current terminal built in 1958. It will feature 36 gates compared to the existing 29 and will accommodate larger aircraft like the Boeing 747-8. A key aspect of the new design is a centralized security checkpoint intended to streamline passenger flow.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine praised the project during his attendance at the ceremony: "After the work is done, I think people will be very excited when they land here. We are a signal to them and how welcoming we are as a state and what a great state this is."

Southwest Airlines' Senior Vice President Adam Decaire highlighted benefits for travelers: "For travelers, it provides a single concourse and security checkpoint." The plan includes constructing a one-million-square-foot terminal and additional parking facilities estimated at $180 million.

The total estimated cost of $1.89 billion will primarily be funded by airport users with some government assistance. Bonds covering approximately $1.5 billion will be issued to finance part of this expense.

Construction company Hensel Phelps is set to receive an additional payment pending board approval for advancing this project phase. The new terminal is expected to be completed by 2029 in time for John Glenn Columbus International Airport's centennial celebration.

US Representative Mike Carey remarked on the significance of this development: "What we're seeing today is the future...It's also a sign that says, 'Welcome home.'"
