Qatar Airways is contemplating canceling its order for 25 Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft. Sources familiar with the situation informed Bloomberg that the aircraft no longer aligns with the airline's route network needs.

The Boeing 737 MAX 10 has faced significant delays due to issues with its anti-icing system design and increased regulatory oversight from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Initially scheduled for introduction much earlier, Boeing now plans to release the MAX 10 by late 2025, although further delays are expected.

Airlines such as United Airlines and Virgin Australia have already opted to switch their orders from the MAX 10 to the smaller MAX 8 due to these delays. Qatar Airways may follow suit, potentially reallocating its converted planes to partner airlines like Rwandair and Virgin Australia, which currently operate the MAX 8.

In April of this year, Qatar Airways received the first of nine Boeing 737 MAX 8s as part of its effort to expand its short-haul fleet with modern, fuel-efficient aircraft. This aligns with their "sustainable expansion plans as the world's leading airline." According to ch-aviation data, six out of nine delivered MAX-8s are active in Qatar's fleet, serving short-haul routes such as Doha to Kuwait City and medium-haul destinations like Mumbai and Sharjah.

Two years ago, amidst a dispute with Airbus over paint issues on A350s, Qatar Airways confirmed an order for 25 Boeing 737 MAX 10s. At that time, relations between Qatar Airways and Airbus appeared strained after Airbus canceled an order for other models. However, since then, relations have improved significantly. In July of this year, CEO Badr Mohammed Al Meer announced that previously canceled orders with Airbus had been reinstated.

Qatar Airways operates nearly 200 widebody aircraft from both Boeing and Airbus under a hub-and-spoke model centered at Doha Hamad International Airport. This model enables the airline to connect passengers globally through a single hub in Doha. The strategic location in the Middle East allows efficient travel between Europe and Asia using a modern fleet of widebody aircraft.
