Frontier Airlines has announced plans to indefinitely suspend over 40 routes in the United States, including two to Puerto Rico. This development was initially highlighted by Ishrion Aviation on BlueSky. The airline's preliminary schedule, filed until April 21, 2025, includes the removal of routes from several major airports.

Among the affected airports are Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), Denver International Airport (DEN), and Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). According to Cirium’s Diio airline planning system, these airports were among Frontier's busiest in April.

The airline is also making network adjustments. In November, it announced 16 new routes from various locations such as Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) and Orlando International Airport (MCO).

During Frontier Airlines’ Q3 earnings call on October 29, President Jimmy Dempsey noted that the carrier faced challenges due to excess domestic capacity. He stated that the airline had removed 37% of off-peak flying during the quarter while adding new routes. "This strategy is proving to be a successful adjustment to our deployed capacity whereby, in addition to leisure traffic flows, we enhance our attractiveness to VFR [visit friends and relatives] and small business traffic," Dempsey said.

Frontier expects to continue moderating capacity on certain days in 2025 to improve its revenue per available seat mile performance. Capacity growth is projected in the mid-single digits with an average stage length of 900 miles.

Competitors like Spirit Airlines and JetBlue are also adjusting their capacities for April 2025. Spirit Airlines has scheduled fewer weekly flights year-on-year after announcing a sale of aircraft as part of its Chapter 11 process. JetBlue's 'JetForward' strategy includes network re-adjustments focusing on its East Coast leisure network.

JetBlue updated investors on December 4 about improved travel trends following US elections and Thanksgiving holidays. “For travel in December, in-quarter bookings have exceeded prior expectations in both peak and off-peak travel periods," they stated.
