Delta Air Lines is set to resume its daily seasonal flights between New York City's JFK Airport and Rio de Janeiro's Galeão International Airport starting December 20, 2024. This service will run until March 27, 2025, using Boeing 767-300ER aircraft configured to seat 215 passengers. The airline highlights the route as a means to foster cultural exchange and strengthen economic ties between Brazil and the United States.

"Delta will once again connect two of the most vibrant cities desired by travelers around the world: Rio de Janeiro – famous for its beaches, its urban setting surrounded by lush nature, its rhythm of samba and bohemian vibe – and New York City, one of the most dynamic metropolises on the globe, which, from architecture to gastronomy, arts and culture to sports, offers a multitude of extraordinary experiences," according to Delta.

The flight schedule includes an overnight operation in both directions. Flight DL 28 departs New York at 22:55 and arrives in Rio at 07:30. Conversely, flight DL 29 leaves Rio at 19:59 and reaches New York at 08:00. Ricardo de Oliveira, Delta's Regional Sales Manager in Brazil, emphasized the importance of this route for both countries' customers during peak travel seasons.

"The return of the Rio de Janeiro (GIG)–New York (JFK) route is crucial for Delta and our customers in both countries," said Oliveira. "We launched the flight during the Southern Hemisphere’s summer because many Brazilians travel to the U.S. for vacation, while Americans seek warmth in Rio during their winter."

This move comes amid direct competition with American Airlines on this route. Delta also plans an increase in flights from Atlanta to Brazil using larger Airbus A330-300 aircraft beginning December 19th.

The resumption coincides with Delta's celebration of two years of partnership with LATAM Airlines Group. The joint venture has resulted in six new routes since its approval in 2022.

“With the resumption of the JFK-GIG flight, Delta and LATAM further consolidate their Joint Venture as the #1 partnership of its kind for flights between Brazil and New York,” Oliveira added. “In two years of operation, we have already operated more than 11,000 flights together.”

Research indicates good availability for frequent flyer seats on this new route with roundtrip flights priced at 50,000 Delta SkyMiles plus $33 next year.
