Carsten Spohr Chief Executive Officer | Lufthansa Group

The Lufthansa Group has announced the expansion of its fleet with additional Airbus long-haul aircraft, increasing its firm orders for A350-1000 aircraft from ten to 15. These state-of-the-art aircraft are scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2031, with the total order valued at approximately two billion US dollars at list price. This acquisition will bring Lufthansa's total to 60 A350-900s and 15 A350-1000s, positioning the group as one of the largest A350 customers globally.

Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, stated: "Our order today underscores our great confidence in our long-standing, close and successful partnership with Airbus. With the state-of-the-art A350 long-haul jets, we are accelerating the largest fleet modernization in our history. We are investing more than ever before in our history to make air transport more sustainable, to achieve our CO₂ reduction targets and at the same time offer our customers the highest level of comfort with a first-class travel experience."

Including this latest purchase, Lufthansa Group has ordered a total of 770 aircraft from Airbus over its history and is recognized as Airbus' largest customer worldwide. The integration of ITA Airways into Lufthansa Group Airlines in January will add another 100 short- and long-haul aircraft to its Airbus fleet.

The new aircraft play a significant role in reducing CO₂ emissions. With a current fleet of around 740 commercial aircraft, Lufthansa's strategy emphasizes premium quality, cost efficiency, and emissions reduction. Including recent orders, about 250 new fuel-efficient aircraft are on order by Lufthansa Group, including 100 long-haul models designed for optimal efficiency. These modern twin-engine jets will gradually replace older four-engine models such as Boeing 747-400s and Airbus A340s.

Lufthansa aims to reduce net CO₂ emissions by half by 2030 compared to 2019 levels through both reduction and compensation measures. The goal is to achieve a neutral CO₂ balance by 2050.

Previously in March 2023, Lufthansa had ordered ten A350-1000s with deliveries starting in April 2026. This model offers approximately 15 percent more capacity than its predecessor, the A350-900.
