Silk Way Airlines, an Azerbaijan-based cargo carrier, began operations in 2001 with a fleet of five Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft. Silk Way West Airlines, formed in 2012, has become the largest cargo carrier in the region and operates an all-Boeing fleet. The group includes two main airlines—Silk Way Airlines and Silk Way West Airlines—and is privately owned by the Silk Way Group. Additionally, it includes Silk Way Technics, which focuses on aircraft maintenance and repair.

Silk Way Airlines started as a cargo charter airline to support Azerbaijan's strategy for economic independence. "Azerbaijan needed its own air cargo company as part of a wider strategy to establish its economic independence and leadership in the region; thus, in the early 2000s, Silk Way Airlines was created," stated the airline. Based at Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku, it operates scheduled routes from Baku to Asia and Europe alongside extensive charter operations.

The airline has faced accusations since 2018 regarding involvement in arms shipments with US government financing—a claim it denies. Reports also emerged about lucrative US defense contracts during the Afghanistan conflict.

Initially operating various aircraft types like Antonov An-12s and Douglas DC-8s, today Silk Way Airlines runs five Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft. These include three Ilyushin Il-76TD models and two modernized Ilyushin Il-76TD-90 versions.

In 2012, Silk Way West Airlines expanded operations with a new fleet from Heydar Aliyev International Airport. As an IATA member since 2015 with a GDP certificate for handling sensitive cargo, it is now the largest regional cargo carrier with over 500,000 tons of annual turnover.

Silk Way West Airlines operates Boeing aircraft including Boeing 747-400 (SFCD), Boeing 747-8F, Boeing 777-200F models along with wet-leased Boeing 737-800 (SF) from Georgian Airlines. Future expansion plans include orders for four Boeing 777-200Fs, two Boeing 777-8Fs, and two Airbus A350Fs.

Despite not having announced further expansions for its current fleet or network at this time, Silk Way West Airlines continues to plan for growth through strategic partnerships with both Boeing and Airbus.
