Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the United States, handles over 50 million passengers annually. The airport has recently expanded its International Arrivals Facility (IAF) to accommodate increasing international passenger numbers and improve overall passenger experience.

The new IAF, unveiled in 2022, replaces a 50-year-old structure and nearly doubles the number of international gates from 12 to 20. It increases passenger capacity to more than double at 2,600 passengers per hour and incorporates advanced technology for faster passport clearance. Additionally, it increases baggage carousels from four to seven and reduces minimum connection time from 90 minutes to 75 minutes.

The design was led by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), a Chicago-based firm. The facility includes a Grand Hall for baggage claim and customs processing and an international corridor connecting arriving passengers on the A Concourse. Notably, it features an aerial walkway that is "an all-new welcome to our region," according to Lance Lyttle, Managing Director of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

The pedestrian bridge at the IAF is notable for being the world's longest structure over a live taxiway at 780 feet long and standing at 85 feet high. This allows even large aircraft like the Airbus A380 to pass underneath safely. Constructed off-site in multiple pre-fabricated components, it weighs about 3,000 tons with welds critical for structural strength.

The assembly involved transporting large sections using remote-controlled transporters while closing runways overnight to avoid disrupting operations. If stood on end, this bridge would be among the tallest structures in the region.

A pedestrian escalator assists travelers across this distance; it is one of the world's longest at 191 feet long with an increase in height of around 80 feet.

Michael Duncan from SOM highlighted that "the design significantly improves efficiency" while creating "an uplifting, light-filled experience." The project created over 10,000 jobs locally and cost approximately $900 million funded through various sources including airport-generated revenues.

In terms of traffic data for Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in 2023: Alaska Airlines holds a dominant market share followed by Delta Air Lines and SkyWest Airlines. The busiest domestic routes include Anchorage and Los Angeles while internationally Vancouver leads followed by London Heathrow.

Upcoming routes feature Hawaiian Airlines' services operated by Airbus A330-200 aircraft as part of its merger with Alaska Airlines. Further improvements are underway at C Concourse aimed at enhancing customer service levels within space constraints faced by SEA due its limited land area compared with other major U.S airports.

Lance Lyttle emphasized their approach: “We’re building up instead of out! By adding four new floors...we’re able to provide a much higher level of service desired by our customers.”
