Several years ago, American airlines faced the challenge of replacing aging 50-seat aircraft such as the Bombardier CRJ 100/200 and Embraer ERJ-145. As major manufacturers like Embraer and Bombardier had ceased production of these smaller planes, an alternative solution was necessary. Bombardier's approach involved modifying the larger CRJ700 to create a new model with only 50 seats, known as the CRJ550.

In February 2019, FlightGlobal reported that Bombardier was advancing with the certification process for this new model. United Airlines was announced as the first carrier to incorporate these planes into its operations through GoJet Airlines based in St. Louis.

Certification for the CRJ550 was achieved by September 26, 2019. Fred Cromer, then President of Bombardier, remarked on this development: “The new CRJ550 model is the only solution in North America that can replace the existing fleet of aging 50-seaters... This is one more example of how we are focusing on creating value for our customers and a very important endorsement from United in regards to the CRJ platform.”

The inaugural flight took place in early October from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to Harrisburg International Airport (MDT). Zach Griff from The Points Guy noted that upon boarding, "how spacious the aircraft felt."

Initially exclusive to GoJet Airlines until July this year, SkyWest Airlines has since begun operating similar aircraft under Delta Air Lines' Delta Connection brand. Differences include power outlets and USB ports at every seat on SkyWest's versions.

Data from Cirium indicates there are over 8,000 scheduled flights for the CRJ550 within the U.S. this month alone—6,387 operated by United via GoJet—with routes such as Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) being particularly busy.

Bombardier designed several features into this model to enhance passenger experience despite reducing seat count by twenty compared with its predecessor. The plane offers premium seating options including ten first-class seats equipped with power outlets and USB ports.

United introduced a snack bar concept on board; however Zach Griff observed during his inaugural flight experience some logistical challenges due mainly due limited staffing constraints onboard affecting service speed especially concerning alcoholic beverages distribution which must be served by attendants according FAA regulations .

To address typical regional jet limitations regarding carry-on luggage capacity , four dedicated closets were incorporated each capable storing twelve bags thereby minimizing need gate checking .

Lastly compliance requirements under scope clauses dictated maximum takeoff weight adjustment downwards ensuring alignment contractual obligations between airlines unions thus facilitating operational feasibility given prevailing industry constraints .
