Avianca Cargo, traditionally known for its operations in South America from Bogotá, Colombia, has made significant strides at Miami International Airport. The airline is now recognized as one of the top three cargo carriers at this major U.S. gateway. In a conversation with Simple Flying’s Dillon Shah, Senior Vice President Diogo Elias highlighted the importance of Miami and Los Angeles as crucial hubs for Avianca Cargo's North American operations.

Elias stated, “In North America, our main hub is Miami where we are one of the top three cargo airlines connecting over 25 destinations. Also, Los Angeles is a strategic connecting hub and plays a key role on our West Coast network, where we strengthen recent operations to and from Mexico.”

From Miami, Avianca Cargo operates dedicated freighter flights to various South American countries including Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, México, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil. The airline conducts approximately 60 weekly freighter flights along with about 64 belly cargo operations out of Miami.

The company has recently enhanced its capabilities at Miami International Airport by significantly increasing its handling capacity in 2024. This improvement was notably reflected during Valentine’s season with an 83% rise in handling capacity due to investments in temperature-controlled facilities.

Additionally, Avianca Cargo reported a 20% enhancement in delivery times thanks to general investments at the Miami hub. The transition to completely paperless delivery processes has improved efficiency and helped with “control and traceability.” Elias remarked on these advancements: “According to our commitment to achieving the highest service levels in our main and busiest hubs, we invested in our facilities and processes to increase capacity and improve time efficiency.”

The airline carries both perishable and non-perishable goods from Latin America which includes salmon from Chile, fruits from Brazil and Central America, flowers from Ecuador and Colombia among others. Flowers constitute about 65% of northbound shipments while fruit transport accounts for another 28%. Imports into South America include luxury brands and pharmaceuticals.

Miami also serves as an export hub for technology transport and e-commerce products heading southward. Avianca Cargo recently introduced a new route linking Liège with Miami through a Turkish Airlines codeshare agreement aimed at enhancing global connectivity across continents.

Elias elaborated on this development: “The Liege-Miami operation is designed to make Liege function as a hub connecting European and Asian markets with Avianca Cargo’s extensive network in Latin America through Miami."

The partnership with Turkish Airlines opens up possibilities for collaboration initiatives including freighter capacity agreements across networks. As Elias noted: “Nowadays Avianca cargo is able to connect to over 350 destinations worldwide through cargo flights passenger flights interline agreements with airlines like Turkish or Cathay.”
